First Fraction

Up.
The holes only provided one option
To peer through as they positioned me on that
Stiff.
And sterile,
White sheet.

Immobile.
Just as they planned it.
—Just as we’d practiced.

The plastic hugged my face
offering up the comfort of a cold hand,
But the assurance of protection and precision.

My pupils paced the ceiling
Waiting.
For the chance to swallow the
Sand castles built by
those “few minutes”

And then waiting. Again.
For another 29
first fractions
to pass.
